The history of silver as an investment

For more than four thousand years, silver has attracted people's fascination regarded as a form of money and store of value. However, silver has lost its role as a legal tender in all developed coun-tries (including the United States) since the end of the silver standard. After then, the main demand for silver is for jewelry, industrial applications, bullion coins and used as investment.

Silver as an investment is always pursued by people. The fluctuation of silver price has attracted investors' eyeball. From September 2005 to late April 2006, the silver price rose quite steeply, ris-ing from $7 per troy ounce to $14 per troy ounce. In March 2008, the price of silver had risen to $20 per troy ounce. However, since the effecting of the credit crunch, it plummeted 58% in October 2008, along with other precious metals and commodities. Due to the economic concerns about in-flation and uncertainty regarding bailouts in the Eurozone, the silver price had rebounded and risen to $49.21 per ounce on April 29, 2011, which price reaches the 31-year high. But in the followed three days, the price of silver plunged 33%.

From January 2012 onwards, the price of silver has risen sharply, being initially $27.59 per troy ounce but reaching a year high hitting $37.49 per troy ounce in March 2012. Then, the price of sil-ver is in a more substantial downward hitting a year low $26.12 on June 28.

In the first half of 2013, silver has emerged the rare big empty trend since 2011. The silver price plummeted nearly a half, fell from a maximum of $32 per troy ounce to $18 per troy ounce. In the second half, the silver overall kept weak that the more obvious features is the shock whipsaw.
