South African gold and Silver market

South Africa was once the world's largest gold producer, however, it has dropped to sixth place in recent years because of its mines age. Even so, the gold mining is still an important pillar of South African economy.

The South African Futures Exchange (SAFEX) is composed of a financial markets division (equity derivatives) and an Agricultural Markets Division (abbreviated AMD, agricultural derivatives). In September 1988, the South African Futures Exchange (SAFEX) and the SAFEX Clearing Company were established. In 2001, the SAFEX agreed to be acquired by JSE, but retained the SAFEX branding and created two divisions - SAFEX Financial Derivatives and SAFEX Agricultural Derivatives.

The JSE Limited (previously the JSE Securities Exchange and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange) is a sole full-service, largest stock exchange in African. It is located in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa. In 1887, the JSE was established as a stock exchange. In 1979 Krugerrands are officially listed. In 2001, the JSE acquired SAFEX, and became the leader in both equities and agricultural derivatives trading in the South African market. In April 2007, the JSE TradElect system (electronic trading) replaced the JSE SETS system. The JSE is planning to create a pan-African exchange by initially enabling investors to trade in shares from Zimbabwe, Ghana, Zambia and Namibia. Later, it intends to expand this across the rest of Africa.
